| While the Song dynasty ruled southern china, the Mongols made it difficult for them. A man named Genghis Khan led the Mongols. He organized his men so well that in 1234, Mongols completed the conquest of northern China. But, before they conquered northern China, Genghis Khan passed away. In 1260, Kublai Khan was chosen as the next ruler. To become closer to his subjects, Kublai moved his capital from Mongolia to Beijing. Later he rebuilt the capital in the traditional Chinese style and declared himself as the emperor. This was because he thought if he adopted Chinese traditions of government, it would make it easier for him to rule and be accepted by the Chinese. Kublai attacked Song dynasty many times, and as a result he overpowered them and they defeated last defense of Song dynasty in 1279. Then Kublai became the first ruler to control all of China in over 300 years. The Mongols changed a lot of China's life and culture. But, they did strengthen China's links to the rest of the world. Under the Yuan Dynasty, trade flourished and also helped the spread of ideas in the west. The Mongolians had a huge impact of China's communication with other parts of world.
